A ceramometal or porcelain crown or bridge is placed when a tooth or teeth become brittle from large restorations, endodontic treatment (root canal) or other causes. The natural tooth has to be shaped so that the crown can be fitted over the tooth to help prevent fracture of the tooth.

Dr. Sharp is very conservative and will not recommend a crown unless it is warranted. Even though crowns are made of metal and ceramics, it is still necessary to brush and floss. Teeth with crowns are still susceptible to decay underneath the crown if not properly maintained.
